Our role as educators is multifaceted: we support the development and learning of the next generation while preparing them for an uncertain future. Adding complexity to our mission is the unique relationship among schools, parents, and students—a triangle that presents both challenges and opportunities for our school system and society at large.
Parents come to schools in the hope that their children will learn and acquire all the skills and knowledge they require to lead successful lives now as well as in the future. However, the path for children to become intelligent, aware, kind, thoughtful and skilled adults is not a linear one. It comes with its ups and downs; children experience numerous achievements alongside various challenges and setbacks. During challenging moments, tension often arises between schools and parents, as concerned parents often look up to schools for answers and reassurance.
As a small alternative school, we have learned the value of building strong parent partnerships. Every year we go through hundreds of difficult, honest, and transforming conversations with parents, which has helped better our institute. We have continuously worked towards creating more openness, transparency, and clarity so that we can stand firm in our stance of being a learner-centred school without getting swept away by the demands of parents. We emphasize the importance of community and relationships and have nurtured a sense of community by organizing events, celebrations, and projects that involve families.
In our journey, we have identified several key elements which create a powerful and nurturing alliance between parents and school. A few of these are summarized below:
A partnership in service of the student: Inspired by the Reggio-Emilia Approach, we see children as protagonists in their own learning process. Parents and educators are allies who support and guide the child as they explore, discover, and learn. This partnership is not a mere transactional arrangement but a dynamic and collaborative effort aimed at creating a nurturing environment for the child. Parents bring invaluable insights about their child's personalities, preferences, and needs, and we as a school offer a stimulating learning environment and our knowledge of child development. Working together with parents has helped us create a cohesive support network that addresses the child's needs comprehensively. For example, if a child is displaying social or emotional challenges, it helps for parents and educators to discuss their respective observations and concerns and collaborate on strategies to support the child's well-being. This integrated approach ensures that children receive consistent support, both at home and in school.
The importance of alignment of values and effective communication: For the partnership between parents and schools to be effective, it is crucial that we align in our values and expectations. This alignment fosters a sense of unity and coherence in the child's learning journey. At our school, the values of care, respect, and trust are central to our school community. We nurture and strengthen this alignment from the admission process onwards through open, honest dialogue and ongoing collaboration. We organize workshops and meetings which are reflective spaces for dialogue around our shared values, and successes and challenges in the journey of playing our respective roles of being parents and educators. By engaging in these two-way conversations, we identify common ground and work towards reinforcing our shared values. Most importantly, alignment of values helps us in resolving potential conflicts and misunderstandings. When parents understand and respect our perspective as a school, we can address disagreements constructively and find mutually acceptable solutions. This collaborative spirit fosters a positive and supportive environment that eventually supports the child in their developmental journey.
Respect for administrative policies and boundaries: While collaboration and open communication are essential, it is equally important for parents to respect the administrative policies and boundaries set by the school. These policies are designed to ensure the smooth functioning of the school and the safety and well-being of all children. We need parents to recognize and honour these boundaries to maintain a healthy and productive relationship.
As a school, we have learned to prioritize our role in communicating our policies clearly and reminding parents about respecting administrative policies involves adhering to school rules, procedures, and guidelines. We also have clearly communicated guidelines on boundaries extending to the roles and responsibilities of parents and educators. While parents play a crucial role in supporting their child's education, we remind them to trust the professional competence of the school team and avoid overstepping their boundaries by interfering in the professional decisions of educators and administrators. At the same time as a school, we also respect the autonomy and authority of parents in matters related to their child's upbringing and personal choices. By respecting these boundaries, as a school community, we create a balanced and respectful partnership that allows both stakeholders to contribute effectively to the child's development.
Encouraging parental involvement in the learning environment: We value the active involvement of parents in the learning environment. We invite parents to observe their child’s day at school, participate in engagements, share their knowledge and skills, and contribute to projects. This involvement enriches the learning experience for children and strengthens the bond between parents and the school community. When parents engage directly with the learning process, they gain a deeper understanding of our learning approach and philosophy, leading to greater alignment and cooperation.
Promoting lifelong learning for both children and adults: We view education as a lifelong journey for both children and adults. We offer workshops and resources for parents throughout the school year to support their own learning and development. By valuing lifelong learning, we as parents and educators model the value of continuous growth and curiosity in children.
This partnership between parents and schools is integral to our school, where collaboration, mutual respect, and shared values are upheld by all stakeholders of the community. By actively involving parents in the learning environment, practising a culture of reflection, valuing the child's voice, promoting lifelong learning, and building strong community connections, we strive to create a rich, supportive, and dynamic educational experience for children.
